IMG_7413 Memphis Store Front _ RTP_SFW

This is a store front in downtown Memphis … there is a sign on the window that reads ” Strange Cargo “, so I do not know if that is the name of the store or if it is a line of clothing or whatever that sell in this shop, but it is what I named this photo.  I regret the fact that I did not wonder on in and check it out since it looks like my kind of place … notice that I said my kind of place and not Pam’s kind of place.  I have another that I am going to throw up from Sam Phillips’ Sun Records …

I enjoy looking at the photos on these walls as much as I like looking at all of the records and in some cases, I enjoy the photos much more.  I always wonder if the photographers that made these photos ever thought how popular these images would be 50 and 60 years later.  Here is another Elvis poster …

IMG_7298 Music Pages _ RTP _ SFW

I cannot remember if this was at Graceland or at Sun Records, but it does not really matter … I think that these are OK, but what could have been created if Colonel Parker had hired a talented art designer or graphic artist to design these music sheets.  I read somewhere about how popular these music sheets where with Elvis’ audience that he sold millions of these music sheets to his fans at his concerts, in fact it was not just with Elvis but Hank Williams was the first county musician who popularized selling these music sheets at his concerts.  I have some more photos of Graceland and also of inside the studio at Sun Records that I am going to throw up ,,, and also some images I made in Clarksdale Mississippi.  Thanks for looking and please check back and all comments are appreciated … Frank

IMG_7350 Gate 1 _ RTP_20 Aug 14 _SFW

Pam and I took a trip up to Memphis back in 2005 … we have been all over middle and eastern Tennessee, but have never been west of Nashville.  So we made the trip up to Memphis in April of 2005.  I downloaded the images to a hard-drive that I cannot get to start and thought that all were lost.  However, I have hundreds of CD’s and luckily I had saved a group from the trip.  After going through them, I decided to work some up and post a series of them here.  Above is the gate at the drive-way and then I am going to move to the house.  As usual, I will try to leave out the running commentary and let the photos speak for themselves, but I might just include what room you are viewing at the time for the few that have not toured Graceland.  Here we go …

IMG_7207 Living Room Graceland _ RTP _ SFW

The above is the living room when you enter the front door.  Now, all of these images are hand-held and available light … they do not allow flashes and tripods.  I guess they want you to spend fifteen dollars on a nice, glossy catalog ( that I did buy ) and besides, you have hundreds of people walking through the house with you.  These areas are roped off so that you cannot wander through the rooms and sit on the furniture.  Next is the Jungle Room that you have heard so much about …

One more of the Jungle Room …

The next is the TV Room, which happens to be my favorite room in the whole house.  How about that ceramic monkey?  I wonder if there was a run on them when the world found out that Elvis had one in his TV room?  The next is the bar, which would be to the right of the monkey …

I still have a few more from Graceland that I might show in another post later.  I have another set of images from Sam Phillips’ Sun Record Studio that I made during this trip and I will throw them up in the near future.  There are some interesting views of the recording studio and offices to those of you interested in recording equipment.  Thanks for looking and if any of you have any interesting stories of Elvis or from Graceland, let us hear them.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Another Rock City Roof …

with one comment

This barn is on the south side of I-24 when you cross over from Georgia into Tennessee.  You go across Nickajack Lake and this barn is up on top of a little hill on the south side of the interstate.  This is only the third barn that I have seen in the last twenty years that still remains with ” See Rock City “.  It used to be that you would see them all over the place when you traveled around Chattanooga on the interstate and on the county roads.  I remember reading an article on the man who did all of these signs … it is hard to believe that it was just one man who did all of these signs.  I think the article said that he would approach the owner of the barn and offer them $300 or $400 to paint the Rock City sign on their barn.  He traveled all over the south for twenty-five years or so doing this for the company that owned Rock City.  The photo below is the same photo … all I did was ” distress ”  the image in Photoshop and add a frame for a border.

Just something for a different effect.  If anyone has any information on the sign painter or the location of any more of these barns, you are welcome to share them here … thanks for looking!
