Seattle and the San Juan Islands …

Greetings … I’ve been busy the last month or so and I missed posting anything in December.  In fact, that was the first month that I missed posting since I started this personal photography blog.  The above photo was taken on a trip to Seattle at the Pike Street Market last month.  I have a lot of images that I am shifting through and will post in the months to come.  Most are just a bunch of random “grab” shots that I thought looked interesting at time, but I know that I have a handful of award winners … that is joke, pitiful as it is.  This was my first trip to Washington and it is a beautiful area.  We really had a nice time, even though it was short.  Here are several more  …

This little church was at a winery on San Juan Island just up the road from Friday Harbor.  I cannot remember the name of the winery or the exact location, but it was only a few miles up the road from the actual harbor itself.  The last photo is of the Lime Kiln Lighthouse on San Juan Island.  It is located only a few miles from Roche Harbor …

This is just a tight crop of the entire image that I posted on my Instagram account.  The island in the background is Canada and I think that is the island that Victoria is on.  I plan on doing something more with this image … different crop, border, framing.  Not sure what at this point.  Thanks again for looking.  I have a lot of other random images from this trip and from the few days that we spent out on Pensacola Beach at Portofino.  Hope everyone had a safe and happy holidays, we did.  Looking forward to seeing what 2017 has in store. Stay safe and please check back … Frank

Delchamps in Downtown Pensacola …

delchamps-_5x4_-28-oct-16-_-rtp-_-sfw

This photograph of the Delchamps grocery store in downtown Pensacola at the corner of Garden and Baylen Streets was taken by photographer Charles Cottrell sometime around 1920 or so. My father worked at this store sometime in the late 1920’s or early 30’s.  His mother ran a boarding house on Garden Street where Gulf Winds Credit Union is today.  He also played for their basketball team and I have a group photo of the team over at the other blog I have, which is about my father’s photography.  The building is still there today, but it has been converted to office space and is a bank currently.  Look at all of the oil stains out front of the store … I guess pressure washers have not been invented when this photo was taken.  Also, you have to wonder the people’s drive ways looked like during this time since cars had only been in existence for twenty or thirty years when this was made.  This photo is part of archives at UWF in the basement of the library that is available for anyone to search through and download.

Which brings me to my next point, I have started to give some of my father’s negatives to Dean DeBolt and his staff for archiving.  If you read my blogs, I mentioned several years ago where I have given thousands of his negatives to the Pensacola Historical Society.  The Historical Society is now part of the UWF Historical Trust.  I went out and talked to them earlier in the week and gave them some negatives that my father had taken of Florida Governor Dan McCarty in Milton Florida back in 1952.  As time goes on, I am going to be donating more, so stay tuned.  Go check the UWF Archives and see all that they have.  I am adding a link for the site here.

Thanks for looking and as usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated … Frank

1964 World’s Fair in New York City …

Misc View _12x8_All Most Check Before Printing_16 July 16_SFW

In 1964, my father and I went to New York City for the Professional Photographer’s of America National Convention.  While we were there, we went to the World’s Fair that was held in Flushing Meadows.  Following are negatives that I found that I cleaned up and am posting.  Nothing great, but they are still interesting to view.  I made a comment on Instagram when I posted some that it is odd to see people walking around without a phone stuck to their ear and people are actually talking to one another… times have really changed!  I have a booklet somewhere that I still have on the World’s Fair, but I cannot put my hand on it now, so I do not have any description to go along with the photos.  The few that I do know I will post a comment.  Here we go …

The next image was taken in the Belgium Village that was constructed and the highlight there were the Belgium Waffles.  Incredible!! Never had anything like it before, granted I was only eleven years old, but it was delicious.  The waffle with fresh strawberrys, powdered sugar and whip creme … never saw anything like that in Pensacola!  They were so popular I think we had to wait in line for ten or fifteen minutes to buy one.  Sorry that it did not occur to me to take a photo of it, so you will have to use your imagination or google it …

And finally the Unisphere.  I purchased  a miniature of the Unisphere to bring home, which I still have, and I made a few photos of it earlier that I have posted.  I thought that I would also include one here …

If anyone went and would like to share their story, please feel free.  If you took a photo of your Belgian Waffle and feel like sharing it, I would love to see it.  That is one more thing that has changed since then … if it were not for food photos and coffee / drink photos, Instagram would have a billion or so less photos every day!  Thanks for looking and feel free to comment … Frank

Mick meets Andy … at least for me anyway.  Mick and the the Stones were playing at the LA Forum back in 1970 when this was taken.  I have a Pop Art app / program that I ran the image through after I had scanned a 35mm negative  I am able to change the colors in the program … I like the dark blue background and red Mick top left and I like the yellow Mick and light blue background on the bottom right.  The two green Micks need some work and I know that I will change them.  As I always say – Life is a work in progress!  I have a series of images that I have put together and plan on letting them meet “Andy” like old Mick here, not implying that Mick is old, but you know what I mean.  Let me hear your comments and thanks for looking … Frank

Las Vegas …

Vogel Neg_Las Vegas_8x10_RTP_21 June 16_SFW

This is something that I would classify as  ” street ” photography. I did not take this image, but bought the negative off of EBay for a few dollars.  The negative looked clean and was taken back in the 1960’s, but more importantly it just looked interesting.  Nothing earth shattering here but there is a lot going on within the frame of the photo without anything actually happening and I do not consider a women walking out of a glass door in what looks to be a strip mall interesting.  I have bought a few of these type negatives the past few months  and I plan to share them with you in the future … I just had this one ready and I could put my hand on it easily.  I hope everyone is staying cool this summer, it is hot here in the Florida panhandle.  Like I have mentioned earlier, most of my attention has been on Instagram the past year and I have come into contact with a lot of people that I would not have met through my blogs .  I also plan on putting up a web site again in the future when I can figure out what I am trying to achieve and whom I am trying to reach.  My Instagram address ( for lack of knowing what Instagram calls it ) is – frankphardy .  I have over a thousand posts and I have only been serious it for a year.  I have combined my photography ( which is all over the place ) , my father’s images that I post on his site that I run ( a link is in the column to your right ) and the images that purchase from other photographers, EBay, etc.  When I do purchase a print or negative from someone I always work it up in Photoshop, clean it up, crop it, alter it some way, before I post it in a blog or Instagram.  Thanks for looking … if you ever went to this show or review back in the 1960’s in Las Vegas, I would love to hear from you.  Or if you just want to comment on the image, knock yourself out ( just figuratively ) … Frank.

Horse Racing at Churchhill Downs …

IMG_0080 Horses and Sign_5x5_9 May 16_Watercolor_ SFW

Here are several more horse racing images that I worked-up last night.  I saw a poster in Louisville this past weekend that I really liked and thought that it added a different / interesting look to an image that was already interesting.   Taking a break from working up people photos, I thought that I would experiment with some horse-racing photos.  These filters are under the “artistic” menu in Photoshop and I have seen where the watercolor filter gives an interesting effect, so that is what I have been using.  I still have a long way to go with these and there are a lot of combinations that you can run on the image.  Here is one more …

IMG_0510 Number 12 in air_5x5_9 May 16_Oceanripple_SFW

This one is going to take more work until I can get it the way I like it.  Notice how the number “12” horse is completely in mid-air.  I hope that you enjoy these and if you have any comments, please do.  The next few posts will be from Churchhill Downs, so I hope that you enjoy horse racing!  Thanks again for looking ad as usual, all comments are appreciated ….

2016 Kentucky Derby …

IMG_0117 Paddock Area_10x10_RTP_11 May 16 _SFW

Pam and I went to the Kentucky Derby this past weekend as guests as some friends of ours.  We had a great time with 167,000 of our best friends! No, I did not get a chance to personally talk to everyone, but I tried my best.  The image above is one I made in the paddock area between races.  You are going to see a change in some of my photos … I am going to try to get a more illustrative look to them.  I saw a poster / card while in Louisville that I liked and then that little light-bulb went off … it was done in Photoshop!  That got me to thinking ( I know that is a stretch ) that a lot of average, mundane looking photographs can be turned into something interesting … as in the image above.  We will see where this leads.  A few more I worked up from Churchhill Downs …

I have a lot more that I plan on experimenting with, so bear with me.  Let me know what you think about what I have done, so please feel free to comment.  If you were in Louisville and were at Churchill Downs and what to share your experiences, I would love to hear them.  Thanks for looking and please check back.  I have been on Instagram more the past year and have ignored my blogs a little, but I plan on plugging away with them.  I have of lot of new images to post and I will in the future… Frank
