Delchamps in Downtown Pensacola …

delchamps-_5x4_-28-oct-16-_-rtp-_-sfw

This photograph of the Delchamps grocery store in downtown Pensacola at the corner of Garden and Baylen Streets was taken by photographer Charles Cottrell sometime around 1920 or so. My father worked at this store sometime in the late 1920’s or early 30’s.  His mother ran a boarding house on Garden Street where Gulf Winds Credit Union is today.  He also played for their basketball team and I have a group photo of the team over at the other blog I have, which is about my father’s photography.  The building is still there today, but it has been converted to office space and is a bank currently.  Look at all of the oil stains out front of the store … I guess pressure washers have not been invented when this photo was taken.  Also, you have to wonder the people’s drive ways looked like during this time since cars had only been in existence for twenty or thirty years when this was made.  This photo is part of archives at UWF in the basement of the library that is available for anyone to search through and download.

Which brings me to my next point, I have started to give some of my father’s negatives to Dean DeBolt and his staff for archiving.  If you read my blogs, I mentioned several years ago where I have given thousands of his negatives to the Pensacola Historical Society.  The Historical Society is now part of the UWF Historical Trust.  I went out and talked to them earlier in the week and gave them some negatives that my father had taken of Florida Governor Dan McCarty in Milton Florida back in 1952.  As time goes on, I am going to be donating more, so stay tuned.  Go check the UWF Archives and see all that they have.  I am adding a link for the site here.

Thanks for looking and as usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated … Frank

The Little Photographer …

IMG_1167 The Photographer 2 _ RTP _ SFW

This is our granddaughter, Payton, who lives in Atlanta and she received a camera for Christmas from her Uncle Lee.  She took it with her on our trip to Charleston and I made a series of photographs of her using her new camera.  She started looking at everything in a different way and things that would have not gotten her attention, suddenly became interesting.  And at four, a lot of what we adults take for granted since we have seen all of these things for decades, now become a new discovery for her … like these fire sprinkler hook-ups ( just my term, since I do not know what the firemen technically call these …  ) .  Now, I am going to start my series of photographs of Payton that I have simply titled … The Little Photographer …

IMG_1189 Getting Ready _ RTP _ SFW

The little photographer is now on Market Street in downtown Charleston South Carolina when she spots a willing subject that gets her attention.  However, before she put the camera up to her eye and takes the portrait, she decides that she needs to study her subject a little more closely …

Luckily for Payton, her subject is very patient and let’s her get close, so she can capture the most flattering angle to insure an award – winning portrait.  OK, she thinks that she has the best angle to flatter her subject …

Now comes the easy part … pressing the shutter.  Luckily for you viewers I was able to get her father to forward the finished image to me, because I felt that it would not be fair to the readers to leave them without the pleasure of viewing Payton’s portrait of ” Chester the Horse “.  So without further ado,  here’s Chester …

Horse _ 8x8 _ RTP _ SFW

Doesn’t this just want to make you  give Chester a big ole nose rub or pat?  Excellent portrait, Payton!  Who knows where this image might take you … international acclaim, photo-journalism, commercial photography, most definitely animal / portrait photography!  Well, that is my little bit of fun for New Years Day.  I hope you enjoyed my little series ” The Little Photographer ” … Please check back and let me hear your comments … I will forward all photography / modeling assignments to her mother in Atlanta and to Chester at the Charleston Carriage Company, but I think Chester will most likely decide to keep his day job.  Thanks for looking and Happy New Year … Frank

Navarre Beach Florida …

Destination Pole _ RTP_4x6 _SFW

We have been staying at Navarre Beach in a condo these past few days that Jenna has rented on the Gulf.  It is a quad-plex right on the Gulf … park your car at your front door and walk up the stairs.  When you stay at the condos that you will see later, you park your car in a huge parking lot, carry your things to the elevator and wait for it to get to you to take you to your floor.  Now, don’t get me wrong, the condos are very nice and all have a gorgeous pool area for you to relax by, but you still have to walk a long way and carry your stuff before you get to your unit.  Enough about that … I do not know what these ” destination ”  poles are called, if someone knows, please tell me.  This one is almost directly across from the unit that we were staying in and I thought that it looked interesting.  I did not bother taking a camera, so all of these images were made with my old iPhone and were worked up in one of the many apps that I bought when I first got the phone several years ago.  Needless to say, I use only 3 or 4 of the twenty or so that I purchased.  The next is a view of of the back porch over looking the Gulf …

IMG_0847 Table with Shells_RTP_SFW

I ran it through a HDR app that I seldom use to see what it would look like and did not bother to save the original images used to create this image.  Not bad, but too over saturated for my taste, but at least you get an idea of the view.  This area does not have all of the spring breakers that Panama City and Ft. Walton Beach get because there is not much for the college students to do … Navarre Beach  has only one beach bar – Juana’s  Pagoda – and it is on the Sound and not on the Gulf.  The place is also a restaurant and serves good food.  The next two images are panoramas that I took while I was standing on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.  The first is from the end looking back toward the beach …

The next shows the beach looking to the east …

The last is just a shot of the condos next to the pier …

The long one is the Navarre Beach Regency and it is gorgeous.  It is a condo, but there is a realty agency there on the premises that rents out the owner’s units for them.   The name of the realty is the Island View Realty.  If you have any questions, please call and ask for information on all of their rentals at Navarre Beach.  That is all I have for now … thanks for letting me indulge my iPhone photography skills or lack there of, I guess it depends on how you look at it.  If you have any questions or comments, please ask and I will be happy to share what I know about the Florida Panhandle … Frank

Oyster Bake on Garcon Point …

IMG_9113 Campfire View at Sunset_WIP

I had built a fire pit out back of the house several months back and we had an oyster bake a couple of weeks back.  We had one several years back and I posted several photos from it, but it was not as elaborate as this ( if you can call this elaborate ).  We had maybe 20 people over and it turned out very nice.  Jenna, Will and Payton came down from Atlanta, along with Pam’s uncle and son from Jacksonville showing up.  Below are Jarryd, Brad, Jenna and Lauren …

Luckily for Lukas the car has run out of juice …

Thankfully, Lukas has Payton to tell him what to do and how to do it.  Sound familiar?

Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach Florida …

Here are some photos that I made last week-end out at Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach.  We took Lukas out to the beach and then decided to take him out to see the fort.  The first several are of him and then the rest are of the fort …

IMG_9212 Lukas 1 _ RTP_1_21_13_SFW

The second photo is not all that good, and he is hard to get him to stand still for too long, so I have to grab what I can.  I will show some more of him on my next post … an oyster bake that we had out at our house.  Now back to Fort Pickens … the first is a straight out of camera shot and the next one will be the same image that was run through a Lucis Photoshop filter …

IMG_9232 Fort with Canon_Adj Lucis Sharp_6x4_RTP_1_21_13 No Border_SFW

Is that interesting or what?  All that I did was run the image through one of the filters in the Lucis program and then adjust the sliders to get the look that I wanted and then check the run button and then what you see comes out.  Here are a few more the exterior and interior views of the fort …

And finally, this sunset from on top of the fort …

It does not look as look like your normal “beach” sunset, to me anyway, if there is such a thing as a normal beach sunset.  If anyone has any comments or questions about any of these photos, please let me hear from you.  Thanks again for looking … Frank

Family Beach Photographs 2012 …

leave a comment »

Above is Pam and Jenna with Payton on the beach.  Payton was not in great spirits, but I was able to capture a few of her “better” moments.   She sure loves being with her momma and her “Ya-Ya”.  Below is one by herself and then one with Lukas.

And finally, one of Lukas by himself on the beach … the light was not the best here, but I just wanted to show how grown he has gotten.

I will post some others with the rest of the family when I get them worked up … Thanks for looking .
