Delchamps in Downtown Pensacola …

delchamps-_5x4_-28-oct-16-_-rtp-_-sfw

This photograph of the Delchamps grocery store in downtown Pensacola at the corner of Garden and Baylen Streets was taken by photographer Charles Cottrell sometime around 1920 or so. My father worked at this store sometime in the late 1920’s or early 30’s.  His mother ran a boarding house on Garden Street where Gulf Winds Credit Union is today.  He also played for their basketball team and I have a group photo of the team over at the other blog I have, which is about my father’s photography.  The building is still there today, but it has been converted to office space and is a bank currently.  Look at all of the oil stains out front of the store … I guess pressure washers have not been invented when this photo was taken.  Also, you have to wonder the people’s drive ways looked like during this time since cars had only been in existence for twenty or thirty years when this was made.  This photo is part of archives at UWF in the basement of the library that is available for anyone to search through and download.

Which brings me to my next point, I have started to give some of my father’s negatives to Dean DeBolt and his staff for archiving.  If you read my blogs, I mentioned several years ago where I have given thousands of his negatives to the Pensacola Historical Society.  The Historical Society is now part of the UWF Historical Trust.  I went out and talked to them earlier in the week and gave them some negatives that my father had taken of Florida Governor Dan McCarty in Milton Florida back in 1952.  As time goes on, I am going to be donating more, so stay tuned.  Go check the UWF Archives and see all that they have.  I am adding a link for the site here.

Thanks for looking and as usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated … Frank

Downtown Pensacola 1970’s …

downtown-pensacola-1970s-1-_5x4_rtp_15-sept-16_sfw

This is one of the better photos of downtown Pensacola from back in the 1970’s that I have.  Looking south down Palafox Street standing in the median just north of where Gregory Street crosses Palafox, you can see all of the way to the end where the old Municipal Auditorium used to be located.  The City bus transfer station is where the Martin Luther King Plaza located today.  And you also have a nice view of the San Carlos Hotel, which at the time this photo was taken ( 1972 ), was still open for business.  St Michael’s Catholic Church is just north of the hotel and I can remember going to the old hotel where the bride’s family would rent a suite for them to get dressed in, since St Michael’s did not have a reception hall or any accommodations for the bride to dress.  Times have changed …   Thanks for looking and please check back.  If anyone out there can remember getting dressed or assembling at the old San Carlos Hotel before a wedding at St Michael’s, I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to comment.

Twelfth Avenue Fire …

Studio Fire 18 _ RTP _SFW

Over at the blog that I have about my father’s photography, I posted about the fire on 12th Avenue that destroyed the block that his studio was in back in 1975.  There are somewhere between 15 and 20 photos that I have collected  about the fire.  I very seldom have a post that links over to his site because I try to keep his work and mine separated.  I have a link to his site on the side bar, but a lot of people that go to either site do not relate the two.  If anyone happened to be there when 12th Avenue burned and wants to comment, please go right ahead … I am interested in all comments.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Re-Worked Images …

Lonesome Highway 1_SFW_9 9 14

This is the original scan of a 35mm Kodachrome transparency that my father had made back in 1954 or 55, on one of his trips out west to visit his sister.  She was an RN who worked in Los Angeles at the Cedars of Sinai Hospital.  I have no idea where this stretch of road is, but I have often wondered.  Sometime in the future I hope to do a photobook of his images from the trips that he made out west in the 1950’s and 60’s.  This is one that I titled ” Road To Nowhere “, however that can always change as usual for me.  I just thought it would make an interesting cover for a book.  Very seldom do I ever post the original scan … I just thought that I would for reference sake.  The next one is the re-worked  image where I have added a texture matte / screen to the image.  I still might change the color to make it look more like a tinted image.  The judge is still out on that one.  He is the re-worked image …

The texture screen is very subtle and does not seem to show up that well once I resize and reduce the image quality for internet usage.  You do know that if you click on any of the images on this site ( or the ones over on my father’s site that I created ) that the image will open up on a new page by itself and I am fairly sure that you can enlarge the image.  This image should be over on my father’s photography blog that I have, but some people that I talk to do not know about the two.  There is a link to it on the right-hand side of the page, but apparently a lot of people either do not know about the link or do not want to click on the link not knowing where it might take them or to what kind of link it is.  I can understand that … I have started to print some of these images to get back into selling some.  It has been so long that I have sold anything off of either site  that I have almost stopped mentioning it altogether.  I have some other photos from Graceland, Memphis and North Mississippi that I have ready to go and will post in the near future.  Also, I have some casual senior girl images that I plan on posting just to remind the mother’s that I do all types of photography and not just head and shoulder photos for the yearbook etc.  Thanks for looking and please let me hear from you if you have any questions or comments … Frank

New Post Over At “FHMMPTWO” …

I think that I am going to start mentioning when I add a new post over at ” Frank Hardy Made My Photographs Two.com”.  I threw up several photographs of Pensacola Dons players ( the one above is N. Wilson ) that I cleaned up recently.  I do not know if people relate the two blogs, but they very much go hand in hand … I never mentioned the two together much before when I had ” FHMMP”  I have decided to abbreviate ” Frank Hardy Made My Photographs ” down  to ” FHMMP ” so I won’t have to type so much, and the new one will be ” FHMMPTWO “.  That is one reason for this post to explain that … my main goal is to grow my readership for the two sites.   At one time, I was getting 750 to 800 hits a month on ” FHMMP ” and I hope to get it back to that and more.   So, thanks for looking at both and if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let me hear them.

FrankHardyMadeMyPhotographs.com Down at Present Time…

with 7 comments

The site ” FrankHardyMadeMyPhotographs.com ” that I have had up for the last two years has been down for the past several months because I did not renew the domain name in a timely enough fashion.  My real problem is that I cannot get anyone at Blogger to respond to my emails and help me get it renewed.  I have over 225 posts from the past two years and it has been extremely slow building up viewers and I would hate to lose them and the site.  The main problem is that I cannot move the domain name somewhere else because it is already registered … to me!  But I cannot get Blogger to let me renew it or even respond to my inquiries by email, forget even finding a phone number to call and talk to a live person.  Anyone with any suggestion, please let me hear them … I am getting desperate!  I have included several photos for people to see what I am talking about.

As you can see, I have posted photos from Brenda Lee to Cochise to Sacred Heart Nursing Graduates to the Coke Cola Show taken at WEAR TV Station on this site.  All photographs that my father had made from his fifty years in the photography business.  And I have hundreds more that I would like to post and comment on if I could only get the domain name re-registered.  Any help is appreciated … Thanks
