New and Miscellaneous Work ….

leave a comment »

I have not been posting much on these blogs since I post to Instagram.  I am at @frankphardy on Instagram for those of you that might be interested and see what I throw up on it.  I seem to attract more attention there that I have on this blog.  But I do not plan on getting rid of this blog since I have had it so long.  Here are a few new images and several that I have reworked. Enjoy …

I am sort of all over the place with these images from California to Ireland to Memphis to back to California and I started it off on Pensacola Beach.  Thanks for looking and please check back, I have some concert negatives that I have acquired from back in the 1960’s and 70’s that I plan to post in the near future.  Don’t forget to go to my Instagram feed … @frankphardy … and see my work there.  Feel free to comment and thanks for looking ….

Delchamps in Downtown Pensacola …

delchamps-_5x4_-28-oct-16-_-rtp-_-sfw

This photograph of the Delchamps grocery store in downtown Pensacola at the corner of Garden and Baylen Streets was taken by photographer Charles Cottrell sometime around 1920 or so. My father worked at this store sometime in the late 1920’s or early 30’s.  His mother ran a boarding house on Garden Street where Gulf Winds Credit Union is today.  He also played for their basketball team and I have a group photo of the team over at the other blog I have, which is about my father’s photography.  The building is still there today, but it has been converted to office space and is a bank currently.  Look at all of the oil stains out front of the store … I guess pressure washers have not been invented when this photo was taken.  Also, you have to wonder the people’s drive ways looked like during this time since cars had only been in existence for twenty or thirty years when this was made.  This photo is part of archives at UWF in the basement of the library that is available for anyone to search through and download.

Which brings me to my next point, I have started to give some of my father’s negatives to Dean DeBolt and his staff for archiving.  If you read my blogs, I mentioned several years ago where I have given thousands of his negatives to the Pensacola Historical Society.  The Historical Society is now part of the UWF Historical Trust.  I went out and talked to them earlier in the week and gave them some negatives that my father had taken of Florida Governor Dan McCarty in Milton Florida back in 1952.  As time goes on, I am going to be donating more, so stay tuned.  Go check the UWF Archives and see all that they have.  I am adding a link for the site here.

Thanks for looking and as usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated … Frank

Downtown Pensacola 1970’s …

downtown-pensacola-1970s-1-_5x4_rtp_15-sept-16_sfw

This is one of the better photos of downtown Pensacola from back in the 1970’s that I have.  Looking south down Palafox Street standing in the median just north of where Gregory Street crosses Palafox, you can see all of the way to the end where the old Municipal Auditorium used to be located.  The City bus transfer station is where the Martin Luther King Plaza located today.  And you also have a nice view of the San Carlos Hotel, which at the time this photo was taken ( 1972 ), was still open for business.  St Michael’s Catholic Church is just north of the hotel and I can remember going to the old hotel where the bride’s family would rent a suite for them to get dressed in, since St Michael’s did not have a reception hall or any accommodations for the bride to dress.  Times have changed …   Thanks for looking and please check back.  If anyone out there can remember getting dressed or assembling at the old San Carlos Hotel before a wedding at St Michael’s, I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to comment.

Pensacola Catholic High School Basketball …

Cheerleaders _10x10_RTP_6 April 16 _ SFW

Here are some photos that I took at a basketball game at Pensacola Catholic High School back in the late 1970’s.  The boys and girls basketball teams played Pensacola High School this night.  I cannot remember who won, but it was a good two games.  I thought that I would just start it off with one of the CHS cheerleaders and I will move on the the basketball games next.  Since I cannot remember anything about either game, I will omit the running commentary and just post the photos.  I will start with the girls and then post a few of the boys.  Enjoy …

There are other negatives in the envelope that I might clean-up and post later.  If anyone has any clue who any of the players are, please feel free to comment.  I want to say that these games were played in 1979, but I am probably wrong.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Santa and Elves in Pensacola ,,,

IMG_0011 Santa and Elves_ SFW

Santa and his helper Elves just happened to drop into Chick-fil-A on Bayou Blvd yesterday.  Luckily, I just stumbled in with my camera to capture a few photos of the moment.  I have to say that it was lucky for Santa to have such cute and able helpers with him.  The Elf on the right was really great going around and gathering up kids to visit with Santa … she is really going to be a great “PR” Elf when she grows up.  No, that can not be right since elves never can grow up.  Here are a few more …

I hope that you did not notice holding the iPhone in the first photo … I retouched one other image with him holding it, but did not bother with that one.  I am hoping that all you are saying  how cute Santa’s ” little-helper’s” are and not even noticing what Santa is holding.  Thanks for looking and please check back.  Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas 2015 … Frank

Frankie Ballard at The Pensacola Interstate Fair …

Ballard Band_5x5_26 Oct 15 _ SFW

This past Saturday night Pam and I went out to the Pensacola Interstate Fair to see Frankie Ballard.   I am by no means a concert photographer, but as I always say in this digital world that we live in today … If you can’t shoot’em good, just shoot a lot!!  And that is pretty much what I did.  I did not have access to the center aisle right in front of the stage, so I was off to the left as you look at the stage.  Not really much of a problem since Frankie and the boys move all over the stage.  As always, none of these images are straight out of the camera and all have been worked up in Photoshop.  So here we go …

I have others that I have posted to my Instagram account if you want to see more Frankie. Here is a link to my Instagram account if you are interested.  I have been posting there and have sort of neglected my blogs, only because it attracts a different audience and I have met some people that I would never have come across with my two blogs.  One major regret that taking these concert photos made me realize is that I never carried a camera to all of the concerts that I went to in the late 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.  Back in those early days you could just wander up to the foot of the stage and hang around if there was an open spot.  There was no obstacles like “security” to stop you from taking photos of your favorite band until I would say sometime in the 1980’s.  I thought about it once or twice, but never bothered lugging a camera bag around with me … now I really regret not taking my camera because I have been taking photos since junior high school.  Thanks for looking and if anyone else was there let me know what you think.  All that I can say is that my days of being ” Young and Crazy ” are long gone … Please feel free to comment and check back.  Frank

A Few More From Pensacola Beach This Past Week …

IMG_1974 Pano From Red Fish Blue Fish_RTP_28 Sept 15 _SFW

The above panorama is from a restaurant out on Pensacola Beach – Red Fish Blue Fish – that we had lunch at this past Friday.  The food, service and the food were great and we really enjoyed ourselves.  You look out over the Sound and the place is all open, which I like.  All of these photos, by the way, were taken with my iPhone.  However, they were worked up in Photoshop before I posted them.  On my previous post, I included a panorama that I had taken from our room on the fourth floor at the Hilton located right on the Gulf … it does not get much better than this!  This is an image that Jenna had taken on her iPhone of three Coast Guard helicopters hovering out of the Gulf in front of the Hilton.  You do not really get to see much, but you can make out the helicopters hovering over the Gulf by the rotor wash on the water …

Now, here are a several of Payton and one of Jenna and Payton down at Joe Patti’s Seafood.  The first is Payton with a iPhone playing games, which is what she seems to be doing 75% of the time these days …

The last is just one taken off of the balcony looking at the beach … nothing great, but pretty.
