Delchamps in Downtown Pensacola …

delchamps-_5x4_-28-oct-16-_-rtp-_-sfw

This photograph of the Delchamps grocery store in downtown Pensacola at the corner of Garden and Baylen Streets was taken by photographer Charles Cottrell sometime around 1920 or so. My father worked at this store sometime in the late 1920’s or early 30’s.  His mother ran a boarding house on Garden Street where Gulf Winds Credit Union is today.  He also played for their basketball team and I have a group photo of the team over at the other blog I have, which is about my father’s photography.  The building is still there today, but it has been converted to office space and is a bank currently.  Look at all of the oil stains out front of the store … I guess pressure washers have not been invented when this photo was taken.  Also, you have to wonder the people’s drive ways looked like during this time since cars had only been in existence for twenty or thirty years when this was made.  This photo is part of archives at UWF in the basement of the library that is available for anyone to search through and download.

Which brings me to my next point, I have started to give some of my father’s negatives to Dean DeBolt and his staff for archiving.  If you read my blogs, I mentioned several years ago where I have given thousands of his negatives to the Pensacola Historical Society.  The Historical Society is now part of the UWF Historical Trust.  I went out and talked to them earlier in the week and gave them some negatives that my father had taken of Florida Governor Dan McCarty in Milton Florida back in 1952.  As time goes on, I am going to be donating more, so stay tuned.  Go check the UWF Archives and see all that they have.  I am adding a link for the site here.

Thanks for looking and as usual, all comments are welcomed and appreciated … Frank

Santa Barbara Mission …

santa-barbara-mission-2-_-rtp-_-25-oct-16-_-sfw

This photo of the Santa Barbara Mission was made back in 1915.  I have purchased several negatives of various missions through the years and have never done anything with them.  I have only been to the missions in Oceanside – Mission San Luis Rey –  and the one where Alfred Hitchcock made the movie “Vertigo”,  Mission San Juan Bautista.  There are twenty one missions in the state of California, so two down, nineteen more to go.  I thought that I had posted some photos already of these missions, but just going back through the last year or so it looks like I have not.  I made a good number of images at the Oceanside Mission and I must have only posted them on my Instagram account.  No idea who took this photo.  I just scanned the negative and did a little Photoshop work on the file just to clean it up a bit.  Here is a link to some information on Spanish Missions.

If you ever get a chance to travel to California, do yourself a favor and find a mission near where you are staying and go pay it a visit.  It is really amazing to read and see how these people lived back in the 1600 and 1700’s.   Thanks for visiting and feel free to comment if you have been here to the Santa Barbara Mission or any of the California Missions.

Downtown Pensacola 1970’s …

downtown-pensacola-1970s-1-_5x4_rtp_15-sept-16_sfw

This is one of the better photos of downtown Pensacola from back in the 1970’s that I have.  Looking south down Palafox Street standing in the median just north of where Gregory Street crosses Palafox, you can see all of the way to the end where the old Municipal Auditorium used to be located.  The City bus transfer station is where the Martin Luther King Plaza located today.  And you also have a nice view of the San Carlos Hotel, which at the time this photo was taken ( 1972 ), was still open for business.  St Michael’s Catholic Church is just north of the hotel and I can remember going to the old hotel where the bride’s family would rent a suite for them to get dressed in, since St Michael’s did not have a reception hall or any accommodations for the bride to dress.  Times have changed …   Thanks for looking and please check back.  If anyone out there can remember getting dressed or assembling at the old San Carlos Hotel before a wedding at St Michael’s, I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to comment.

Misc View _12x8_All Most Check Before Printing_16 July 16_SFW

In 1964, my father and I went to New York City for the Professional Photographer’s of America National Convention.  While we were there, we went to the World’s Fair that was held in Flushing Meadows.  Following are negatives that I found that I cleaned up and am posting.  Nothing great, but they are still interesting to view.  I made a comment on Instagram when I posted some that it is odd to see people walking around without a phone stuck to their ear and people are actually talking to one another… times have really changed!  I have a booklet somewhere that I still have on the World’s Fair, but I cannot put my hand on it now, so I do not have any description to go along with the photos.  The few that I do know I will post a comment.  Here we go …

The next image was taken in the Belgium Village that was constructed and the highlight there were the Belgium Waffles.  Incredible!! Never had anything like it before, granted I was only eleven years old, but it was delicious.  The waffle with fresh strawberrys, powdered sugar and whip creme … never saw anything like that in Pensacola!  They were so popular I think we had to wait in line for ten or fifteen minutes to buy one.  Sorry that it did not occur to me to take a photo of it, so you will have to use your imagination or google it …

And finally the Unisphere.  I purchased  a miniature of the Unisphere to bring home, which I still have, and I made a few photos of it earlier that I have posted.  I thought that I would also include one here …

If anyone went and would like to share their story, please feel free.  If you took a photo of your Belgian Waffle and feel like sharing it, I would love to see it.  That is one more thing that has changed since then … if it were not for food photos and coffee / drink photos, Instagram would have a billion or so less photos every day!  Thanks for looking and feel free to comment … Frank

Mick meets Andy … at least for me anyway.  Mick and the the Stones were playing at the LA Forum back in 1970 when this was taken.  I have a Pop Art app / program that I ran the image through after I had scanned a 35mm negative  I am able to change the colors in the program … I like the dark blue background and red Mick top left and I like the yellow Mick and light blue background on the bottom right.  The two green Micks need some work and I know that I will change them.  As I always say – Life is a work in progress!  I have a series of images that I have put together and plan on letting them meet “Andy” like old Mick here, not implying that Mick is old, but you know what I mean.  Let me hear your comments and thanks for looking … Frank

Las Vegas …

Vogel Neg_Las Vegas_8x10_RTP_21 June 16_SFW

This is something that I would classify as  ” street ” photography. I did not take this image, but bought the negative off of EBay for a few dollars.  The negative looked clean and was taken back in the 1960’s, but more importantly it just looked interesting.  Nothing earth shattering here but there is a lot going on within the frame of the photo without anything actually happening and I do not consider a women walking out of a glass door in what looks to be a strip mall interesting.  I have bought a few of these type negatives the past few months  and I plan to share them with you in the future … I just had this one ready and I could put my hand on it easily.  I hope everyone is staying cool this summer, it is hot here in the Florida panhandle.  Like I have mentioned earlier, most of my attention has been on Instagram the past year and I have come into contact with a lot of people that I would not have met through my blogs .  I also plan on putting up a web site again in the future when I can figure out what I am trying to achieve and whom I am trying to reach.  My Instagram address ( for lack of knowing what Instagram calls it ) is – frankphardy .  I have over a thousand posts and I have only been serious it for a year.  I have combined my photography ( which is all over the place ) , my father’s images that I post on his site that I run ( a link is in the column to your right ) and the images that purchase from other photographers, EBay, etc.  When I do purchase a print or negative from someone I always work it up in Photoshop, clean it up, crop it, alter it some way, before I post it in a blog or Instagram.  Thanks for looking … if you ever went to this show or review back in the 1960’s in Las Vegas, I would love to hear from you.  Or if you just want to comment on the image, knock yourself out ( just figuratively ) … Frank.

One More Reagan Photo …

Reagan at Plane 4 _ RTP _ 2 Sept 15_SFW

It clearly looks that Reagan is enjoying himself as he works the crowd in Pensacola.  Look at the little boy that is stretching his hand out to Reagan … I am sure that Reagan shook it and I bet that kid did not wash his hand for a week.  I still have a few more of these that I will post later.  If anyone has any idea who this kid is, let me know.  Just email me who you think or know it is and I will give him one of these photos for his scrapbook.  I am sure that this kid ( I called him little Johnny in an earlier post ) is upset with our Iranian Nuclear Arms ” Deal “.  Thanks again for looking and please check back … Frank

PS – If anyone recognizes any of these people in any of these Reagan photos, please let me know. Thanks … 28 Oct 15
