Masks_10x8_RTP_2_20_14 _ SFW

These are several images that I made back in the 1980’s with a Mardi Gras theme.  I cannot remember what I did this for and had forgotten all about photographing these masks until I ran across them several months ago.  Here is one more …

M G Mask _ RTP _ Feb 2014 _ SFW

I am pretty sure that this is the first time that I have ever shown these … I might have had a call back then for a Mardi Gras still-life and through these together and submitted them to someone.  But like I said earlier, I just do not remember anything about these.  I remember buying this black plexiglass after attending a class on catalog photography in Chicago in the early 80’s  and a large portion of the class had to do with this style of photography.  My Mardi Gras days have long ended, but to those of you that partake in the festivities, please be safe and try to stay out of jail.  Thanks for looking and please check back … all comments are appreciated … Frank

One More Photoshop Painting …

Boot and Spur _ SFW_ Feb 2014 Impres 4 _Smear Fin

Here is another of my Photoshop paintings that I finished yesterday.  I still want to get the program Painter by Corel and use it to paint in the future.  I had bought the program eight years or so back, but it really has a steep learning curve, for me anyway and I never could get a handle on how it works.  But, I would have to buy a new computer with more memory and I have been putting that off.  So for the time being, I am just going to keep using my Photoshop method and work on different techniques that I have read about.  If you have any questions, please ask … I am happy to share what I have learned and please check back … Frank

Ronald Reagan at the Pensacola Airport …

Reagan Rally 1_6x4_RTP_Feb 2014 _ SFW

Back in September of 1980, candidate Reagan made a stop at the Pensacola Airport at around 9:00 one weekday morning.  Having nothing better to do, I thought that I would drive to the airport since it was only 4 or 5 miles from the studio on 12th Avenue.  When I got there, the place was packed … a couple of high school bands, no telling how many thousands of people had gathered around his plane and the stage.  Luckily I knew several of the police and they let me park up close and go on in.  However, I could not get anywhere near the front of the stage, so I had to stand off to the the far right side of the stage.  I had a medium telephoto lens on my 35mm camera, but I never could get directly in front of Ronnie.  You see Mayor Vince Whibbs and Warren Briggs seated on the stage behind the podium.  I was able to get some fairly close shots as he walked off of the stage on his way back to the plane, but I cannot put my hands on those film strips .. I will just have to keep on looking.  Here are some more images from the rally …

I had posted one of these rally images in an earlier post, but I never took the time to work up more than one of the images until the past few days.  I hope you enjoy these and I will look for those other film strips with Ronnie walking to the plane and at the top of the steps waving good-bye to everyone.  Thanks for looking and if anyone happened to be at this rally and wants to share your memories, we would love to hear them.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

The ” Nina ” in Pensacola Bay …

20091222-1141 Nina in Bay_5x4_RTP_SFW

I had taken my grandson, Lukas, downtown to the end of Palafox to let him run around and chase the pigeons / birds … really just to get him out of the house.  The ” Nina ” was sailing in the Bay and was headed to the port to dock.  All I had on me was my Blackberry phone at the time and I took these images.  Nothing much, but I saw in the PNJ were it and it’s sister ship had docked somewhere to the west of us … maybe Perdido Key or Orange Beach, not sure which.  I ran across theses the other day and I thought that I would post them in honor of the ” Nina ” returning.  These had to be several years old because I have had iPhone for two years.  Here is another view …

Cadillac Ranch Outside Of Amarillo Texas …

The art display of old, rusted Cadillacs buried hood first in the dirt turns 40 in 2014.  It was originally created by the art group that called itself ” The Ant Farm ” out of San Francisco.  It was installed on farm land owned by Stanley Marsh 3 that runs along I-40.  I had always heard of it, but did not know anything about the ” display ” or for where it was located in relation to where we were, other than the fact that it was located in Texas.  Pam and I were heading east on I-40 and Pam looked south of the interstate and said that there was a group of cars buried hood first out in this large field.  I caught it out of the corner of my eye as I drove by at 85 mph and told her that I was going to turn around at the next exit and go back.  When we got back to where you can enter the field through a gate off of I-40 and parked, it had just rained, so the field was a sea of mud.  Pam said that she would pass, so I grabbed my cameras and headed off.  There is not much to it really … you have to walk a good distance before you get to the cars and there is nothing else for miles.  After I walked out to where the cars were buried, there was not a sole around, so I just some photos of the buried cars, but after 15 or 20 minutes some other people showed up.  There is a link to the Cadillac art display.  Here is the photo that I created …

I posted this when I first created this blog several years ago.  I also created a poster that I had printed and gave away to some friends of mine …

I also shoot some b&w film with my Hasselblad that I will have to find. but they do not look as good as these.  So, this is my little contribution to the Cadillac Ranches 40th birthday.  I do not know if they are going to have a celebration or not, but I am sure that something will be planned.  I am pretty sure that I will miss whatever they will have, but if any does happen to go, let us hear from you.  Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

Some More North Carolina Images …

leave a comment »

These images were made back in 2008 and I had not done anything with them until just recently.  In fact, I had forgotten all about them and the folder was named incorrectly, so until I opened the folder they were in, I never would have discovered them.  I usually shoot JPEGs, but for some unknown reason, I had shot these as RAW files.  It was not easy to convert them to JPEGs with the prior version of Photoshop that I was using.  I upgraded several months to a newer version of Photoshop, but I am still not up to the current version ( 6, I believe ).  This version lets me open up a RAW file and the it converts it to a PSD file when I close the file after I work on the image.  The first two images are somewhat ” straight ” images … all I did was color adjustments, sharpening and contrast adjustments…

IMG_5981 Blue Smoky Mountains _ SFW_Logo

I could not get the Blue Smoky Mountain image any larger … I had posted one that was similar earlier.  It  was made at sunrise and had some pretty shades of yellow from the sun rising.  This one I believe was taken at sunset and I have only boosted the saturation.  This image was originally a TIFF image and I did not realize that WordPress will not allow you to post TIFF files, the files have to be JPEG’s or GIFF’s.

The rest of the images are ones that I Photoshopped, so I am going to post a before and after, so you can get an idea I what I do to images to clean them up before I post them or let them out  One is a barn with a ” See Rock City ” sign painted on it.  I have posted several barns with the Rock City slogan on them earlier … you used to see them all over the South back in the 1950’s to th 1970’s, but most of the barns have fallen down or into such a state  of disrepair  that they have been saved or rebuilt.  The other images are neon signs for motels in Cherokee, North Carolina.  When you drive across the Smoky Mountains from Gatlinburg Tennessee, you end up in Cherokee.  Cherokee today still looks like it was in the 1950’s … same motels, same restaurants, same tacky stores selling Indian moccasins and paraphernalia that you cannot live without.  And yes, I have purchased my share of souvenirs to keep them in business , too.  Here are the ” See Rock City ” images.  This first image I am proud of because I had to ” construct ” parts of the barn to replace where the sign was located and it took a great deal of time to figure out how to achieve the results I did.  You just cannot cut, paste and mask any section and it automatically matches.  The first image is as the scene looked …

IMG_5875 Rock City _5x7 _RTP_2_5_14 _SFW

I have no idea why I did not just walk around to the front and crop out the sign, but for some unknown reason I did not.  It took me forever to take out the real estate sign …also,  the signage / writing on the side of the barn took me forever to create to match the rest of the letters.  I cannot even remember the name of this little town in North Carolina where I made this photo ( see update below ).  I will get out my map and try to locate the name.  The rest are motel signs that were interesting to me at the time …

This last one has a before and after.  These three were pretty straight forward and the only things that I took out were power lines, poles and some trash on the ground.  This next sign, ” The Teddy Bear Motel ” was a lot more work as you can see …

Teddy Bear Sign Flattened RTP _ SFW

I had posted the ” Teddy Bear ” sign before on an earlier post, but I thought that I would include it with the the other signs from Cherokee.  If you have any memories from any of these places and want to share them, I / we would love to hear them.  In fact any memories from the Smoky Mountains or from the Cherokee  side are welcomed … Thanks for looking and please check back … Frank

UPDATE:  The town that the barn that had the ” See Rock City ” sign painted on the side was in Bryson City, North Carolina.  Like I said earlier, the photo was taken in February 2008.  I have not been back since, so I do not know if the barn is still there or not.  There was a drive-in across the road from the barn that we ate … I will do some more research and see if I can find out the name of the drive-in.  Thanks … Frank
